Is Hemp Flower Oil the Same as CBD Oil?

So, you’ve heard about the benefits of CBD and hemp and you’re looking to get a piece of the action. You do a quick Google search and are surprised to discover that your search for “CBD oil” has produced results ranging from “hemp flower oil” to “hemp seed oil” and more.

Where do you begin, which product is right for you, and do they even contain the ingredient you’re looking for?

Is Hemp Flower Oil the Same as CBD Oil?

Let’s look at these two products first, as they are some of the most commonly confused. It makes sense that this is the case, as they are quite similar.

Hemp flower oil is an extract produced from hemp flowers. It’s a high-quality oil extracted from the very best part of the plant.

The flowers are where you will find the highest concentration of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavanols, many of which are located in the trichomes. These fine hairs grow on the surface of the flowers and are responsible for the “frosty” appearance.

CBD oil, on the other hand, is a general term used to define a product that is extracted from hemp and then refined. A carrier such as olive oil or coconut oil is used to create the final product and ensure you have something that can be added to a food and drink.

A lot of CBD oil is processed from the stalks of the plant, usually after the flowers have been removed and sold loose.

The final product may have similar levels of CBD but it’s not necessarily the same quality.

Imagine that you’re making orange juice. You could simply add the whole orange, or you could remove the skin and the pith and then focus on the sweeter and more fragrant flesh. You still have orange juice that contains similar levels of the same compounds, but the end product is not the same.

What About Hemp Seed Oil?

The term “hemp seed oil,” or “hemp oil,” can further confuse a newcomer. Hemp oil is made by processing hemp seeds, which contain minute concentrations of cannabinoids and are used mainly for their nutritional benefits.

For instance, hemp oil is a great source of many vegan fatty acids, including Omega-3, which is more commonly found in oily fish. It also has high levels of many vitamins and minerals.

If you’re looking for CBD oil and you purchase hemp oil, you’re going to be very disappointed. Hemp oil may provide a number of benefits, but it’s not rich in CBD and it lacks the medicinal qualities that CBD users seek.

Questions to Ask Before Buying

Before you purchase a hemp extract, make sure you answer the following questions:

  • Does it contain high concentrations of CBD? If you’re buying hemp oil, it won’t contain any.
  • Is it full-spectrum? Some oils are concentrated to remove everything but CBD, while others retain the other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavanols, allowing you to experience more of the plant’s goodness.
  • Is it legal? If you’re buying from a different country, make sure the product is legal where you live. In the US, this means it contains less than 0.3% THC, while in parts of Europe, it may mean 0% THC.
  • How was it processed? Did the extraction technique use solvents and low-quality parts of the plant? Such methods are not required and while you will pay more for a cleaner extraction, you’ll also get a much better product.

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by all of this and simply want some CBD to see if it works for you, look for a product that advertises itself as having more than 95% CBD. That’s all that matters to begin with. You can get busy researching all the other details once you’ve tried it, discovered its benefits, and are ready to buy more.
