Let’s say you’ve just harvested or purchased a large quantity of hemp flower, now what? You can’t smoke it all at once, so what do you do?
Those flowers need to be stored in a way that preserves those rich flavors and potent cannabinoids, and in this guide, we’ll show you how to do just that.
Steps for Storing Hemp
If you follow the right steps, your hemp flower will remain pungent and potent for many months. Be sure to store your hemp in a location that is:
Between 77 and 86 Degrees Fahrenheit
Hemp flowers require a consistent temperature, ideally between 77 and 86 degrees. They prefer stable conditions, so you must avoid extreme temperature changes.
Between 55% and 65% Humidity
Bacteria thrive in moist environments and the more moisture you remove, the lower the risk of contamination will be. At the same time, however, you don’t want to dry your hemp out too much, as you may damage the delicate leaves.
Ideally, relative humidity should be kept at between 55% and 65%.
Out of Direct Sunlight
Direct sunlight reduces the cannabinoid content and affects the potency of your flowers. Make sure you keep them away from harmful UV rays.
Air can be just as harmful as sunlight and moisture, if not more so. That’s why dispensaries always store and ship hemp flowers in airtight packets and jars. If you want to keep them fresh for months to come, you need to do the same.
Use airtight mason jars or other suitable containers.
Signs That Hemp Flowers Haven’t Been Stored Properly
Are you concerned that the flowers you purchased haven’t been stored properly? Are you worried that your own flowers have been tainted because you didn’t follow the steps outlined above? Some of the signs of improperly stored hemp flowers include:
- A musty and unpleasant scent
- Changes in color
- Visible mold/mildew
If your flowers display any of these signs, they could be contaminated, and you should refrain from smoking them. We’ve all been guilty of smoking slightly stale flowers and they usually only have a slightly “off” taste and appearance. However, if they have been improperly stored for long periods and have visible signs of deterioration, smoking them could make you ill.
It’s rare, but it’s not worth taking the chance.
