Does CBD Hemp Flower Get You High?

This is one of the most common questions regarding CBD. It comes as no surprise, though, as it’s hard to tell the difference between hemp and cannabis.

WHAT IS CBD HEMP FLOWER?

CBD hemp flower is the flower of a mature female hemp plant that contains high amounts of cannabinoids, particularly cannabidiol (CBD). CBD hemp flowers can be smoked or infused in foods and beverages.

WHAT ARE THE USES OF CBD HEMP FLOWER?

CBD hemp flower contains the therapeutic compound known as CBD, which supports the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system regulates the following functions in the body:

  • Hunger
  • Pain
  • Inflammation
  • Immunity
  • Reproduction
  • Digestion
  • Memory
  • Sleep
  • Anxiety
  • Moods

By interacting with the endocannabinoid system, CBD promotes healing and restoration of vital processes.

WHAT IS CBD?

CBD is one of the many phytocannabinoids that are found in both hemp and cannabis strains. Hemp has over 130 identified phytocannabinoids, but only a handful have been studied within the context of therapeutic use. CBD and THC are the two most popular cannabinoids, and were the first to be isolated and identified.

The biggest difference between THC and CBD is how they interact with the endocannabinoid system. While THC binds directly to the CB1 receptors in the brain, CBD interacts indirectly with both CB1 and CB2 receptors. The latter are located peripherally.

DOES CBD GET YOU HIGH?

CBD does not get you high. The compound that is responsible for the euphoric feeling associated with marijuana consumption is called delta-9-tetrahydrocananbinol, or THC.

THC binds to CB1 receptors, which are located in the centers that are responsible for the feeling of extreme happiness. When THC binds to these receptors it causes euphoria.

CBD, on the other hand, binds to allosteric sites on the CB1 receptors. At these sites, CBD is a negative allosteric modulator, meaning that it inhibits action at these receptors.

Some studies have shown that CBD is able to mitigate some of the negative effects caused by THC, such as memory loss and anxiety. Consuming cannabis strains that contain high amounts of CBD will reduce the intoxicating effects of THC.

DOES HEMP FLOWER CONTAIN THC?

Hemp flower contains trace amounts of THC. Although hemp is legal for cultivation and production in the U.S., it is still a highly regulated crop. As such, farmers go to great lengths to ensure that their hemp does not contain more than 0.3% THC. If hemp is found to contain more than 0.3% THC, it must be destroyed.

Manufacturers of CBD products should have their products tested by a third-party accredited lab to ascertain the amount of THC and other compounds within them. This report should be attached to the products or be available on demand, and is known as a certificate of analysis (COA).

Unfortunately, some CBD products which are touted to be hemp-derived are actually derived from marijuana strains that have high amounts of THC. One study showed that CBD product labels are usually falsified.

When buying CBD hemp flower, verify the source of the CBD and ask to see third-party testing results. If what you see is not satisfactory, you should buy elsewhere.

IS CBD HEMP FLOWER HARMFUL?

CBD found in hemp is not harmful. Several studies have been carried out to determine the safety profile of CBD when consumed by humans, and the results indicate that CBD has an extremely high safety profile. While the starting dose of CBD is 20mg per day, doses of up to 5,000mg per day are still considered safe.

A report that was published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2018 indicated that CBD is safe for human consumption, and that, when side effects do occur, they are usually as a result of an interaction with other drugs.

That being said, smoking CBD hemp flowers may be harmful. This is because smoking involves combustion, which poses a threat to the lungs as it exposes them to toxic fumes. As a result, if you’re going to consume CBD, consider doing so without smoking it.
