Can You Smoke CBD Hemp Flower?

Smoking CBD hemp flower is gaining popularity in different parts of the U.S. for a variety of reasons. While some are experimenting with it, others are using it to help them quit tobacco. For some medical marijuana patients, this is the most appealing way to consume CBD because its effects are felt very quickly.

That being said, are there risks to it? Is it even legal?

Smoking CBD (Hemp) vs. Smoking THC (Cannabis)

Some people mistake smoking CBD hemp for smoking marijuana cigarettes. While hemp contains high amounts of CBD and negligible amounts of THC, marijuana contains high amounts of THC. THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is the compound that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties.

On the other hand, smoking CBD hemp flower will not make you high because hemp does not contain THC. Hemp cultivars that are grown legally in the U.S. contain less than 0.3% THC. This amount is not enough to cause the high feeling associated with marijuana.

Another difference between the two is that recreational marijuana smoking is very common, but CBD hemp flower usually isn’t smoked for recreational purposes.

What’s the Point of Smoking Hemp Flower?

Scientific studies have shown that consuming CBD by any means has therapeutic benefits. Further research regarding these therapeutic benefits is currently underway, but as of now we do know CBD can be used to fight:

  • Pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Seizures
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Inflammation

CBD also causes mental stimulation and it can also uplift your spirits. This is evidenced by the fact that some users have reported that smoking CBD hemp flower is the fastest way to relieve anxiety and depression.

What are Hemp Cigarettes?

Hemp cigarettes are cigarettes made with hemp as opposed to tobacco. They may also contain a small amount of THC, but it is not enough to make you high.

Is It Legal to Smoke Hemp?

Hemp-derived CBD is legal in the U.S., but smoking CBD hemp flower is not legal in all 50 states. Hemp is closely related to marijuana, which is outlawed under federal law. Because it’s not easy for police officers to differentiate smokable forms of hemp from marijuana, a grey area exists.

In 2019, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Indiana banned smokable forms of hemp while Texas banned the manufacturing of smokable hemp. States that have legalized recreational marijuana, such as Colorado and California, are more open to smokable forms of CBD flowers.

Is It Safe to Smoke Hemp Cigarettes?

A report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2018, as well as a number of studies by independent researchers, shows that CBD is safe for human use even when consumed in very high amounts. However, the American Lung Association insists that “inhaling smoke of any kind is considered harmful to the lungs.” This includes smoking hemp flower.

With this in mind, one should limit smoking hemp flower unless further research shows different results.

Is Smoking Hemp Flower Addictive?

Smoking hemp flower is not addictive. In fact, as previously mentioned, research has shown that hemp can be useful for curing tobacco addiction.

Does Smoking Hemp Make your Eyes Red?

Smoking hemp flower will not cause bloodshot eyes, but smoking marijuana will. This is because consuming high levels of THC causes blood capillaries in the eyes to dilate, thus causing the blood supply to the eyes to increase.
